灰姑娘英语作文
And there stood Cinderella in the loveliest gown she had ever seen. On her tiny feet were delicate glass slippers. Cinderella was delighted. “Oh, fairy godmother – it’s like a dream come true!” “Yes, child. But like all dreams, it can’t last forever. On the stroke of midnight, the spell will be broken, and everything will be as it was before.” “I’ll remember,” promised Cinderella. “Oh, it’s more than I ever hoped for! Thank you, fairy godmother.” “Bless you, my child. Now hurry up. It’s getting late.” Cinderella stepped into the pumpkin coach and was whisked away to the royal ball. The King’s ballroom was magnificent. Every lady in the land was dressed in her finest gown. But Cinderella was the loveliest of them all. When the Prince saw the charming Cinderella, he fell in love instantly. The Duke said to the King, You see, Your Majesty, the Prince has danced with that girl all evening. It looks like he’s found the girl he wants to marry. All at once the tower clock began to strike midnight. Cinderella cried, “Oh, I almost forgot!” And without another word, away she ran, out of the ballroom and down the palace stairs. On the way she lost one of the glass slippers, but she couldn’t stop to get it. Cinderella stepped into the magic coach, and quickly drove away. As the clock struck for the twelfth time, the magic ended! Cinderella was left with a pumpkin, some mice, and the memory of her wonderful evening. The next morning the whole kingdom was wondering who the myste rious girl was. The only clue was the lost slipper. The Grand Duke carried the glass shoe from house to house looking for its owner, for the Prince had said he would marry no one but the girl who could wear the tiny slipper. Every girl in the land tried hard to put the slipper on. The ugly stepsisters tried hardest of all! But it was no use. Not a single girl could fit her foot into the glass shoe. And where was Cinderella? Locked in her room, the mean old stepmother was taking no chances that poor Cinderella would try on the slipper. But Cinderella’s mice friends found the key and rushed it up to the locked room. The Duke was just about to leave. “Well, madam, if you have no other daughters, I’ll bid you good day.” Just then he heard a voice calling to him. “Please wait! May I try the slipper?” It was Cinderella. “Of course,” said the Duke. “Every girl must have a chance. Please sit down.” He slid the glass shoe onto Cinderella’s foot and it fit perfectly. Cinderella’s dream had

Football History —Just What Sport are We Talking About Anyway?
Mention the term “football” and depending on just where you are one of two entirely different games might come to mind.In North America, people will picture a smash-mouth game played by large men wearing pads and helmets on a field with goal posts at each end.The ball is moved down the field by running and passing. In most of the rest of the world “football” means a sport played by shorts-clad men and women on a pitch,or field, with netted goals at each end.It is a game that primarily involves the feet as the ball is kicked up and down the pitch. For the purpose of this article,we will focus on the history of football, american style, the first type mentioned.Association football,or soccer as it’s commonly called,is addressed on a different page on this website.
Has football always been this confusing? In a nutshell, yes.
Soccer,Rugby and More
American Football (let’s make it simple and just call it plain ol’ “football”) has it roots in both soccer and rugby.A form of soccer was played as early as 206 BC in the Han Dynasty of China when teams competed in a game called Tsu Chu to celebrate the emperor’s birthday. The roots of rugby-type games go back to 11th century England when young boys played a tackle game with an inflated cow bladder. This child’s play evolved into violent clashes between men from opposing villages.Hundreds of players from each town would attempt to run the bladder into the middle of the their opponent’s town.Injuries and even death were such a common part of the game that the King of England eventually outlawed the sport.
In 1623,football resurfaced (legally) in England as a soccer-type game played on a field rather than in the town streets.Players were not allowed to touch the ball with anything except their feet.At about the same time,Irish teams took up a form of football that allowed players to hit the ball with their fists.
One of the biggest changes in the game happened at Rugby College in 1823.According to legend,William Ellis suddenly stopped kicking the ball, picked it up and ran down the field and across the goal line.Sure,Ellis had broken one of the fundamental rules of the game, but the crowd loved it.Rugby College recognized that Ellis had a good idea and began allowing players to run with ball. This was the official beginning of rugby and the catalyst for what we know today as football.

Cue sports (sometimes spelled cuesports),also known as billiard sports, are a wide variety of games of skill generally played with a cue stick which is used to strike billiard balls, moving them around a cloth-covered billiards table bounded by rubber cushions
All cue sports are generally regarded to have evolved into indoor games from outdoor stick-and-ball lawn games (retroactively termed ground billiards) ,and as such to be related to trucco, croquet and golf, and more distantly to the stickless bocce and bowls.
The word "billiard" may have evolved from the French word billart or billette, meaning "stick",in reference to the mace,an implement similar to a golf club, which was the forerunner to the modern cue; the term's origin may have also been from French bille, meaning "ball".The modern term "cue sports" can be used to encompass the ancestral mace games, and even the modern cueless variants, such as finger billiards, for historical reasons."Cue" itself came from queue, the French word for a tail. This refers to the early practice of using the tail of the mace to strike the ball when it lay against a rail cushion.
A recognizable form of billiards was played outdoors in the 1340s,and was reminiscent of croquet.King Louis XI of France (1461鈥?483) had the first known indoor billiard table.Louis XIV further refined and popularized the game, and it swiftly spread amongst the French nobility. While the game had long been played on the ground, this version appears to have died out in the 1600s,in favor of croquet, golf and bowling games, while table billiards had grown in popularity as an indoor activity.Mary,Queen of Scots, claimed that her "table de billiard" had been taken away by what would eventually become her executioners (who covered her body with the table's cloth).[5] In 1588,the Duke of Norfolk, owned a "billyard bord coered with a greene cloth...three billyard sticks and 11 balls of yvery".Billiards grew to the extent that by 1727,it was being played in almost every Paris cafe.In England, the game was developing into a very popular activity for members of the gentry.
By 1670,the thin butt end of the mace began to be used not only for shots under the cushion (which itself was originally only there as a preventative method to stop balls from rolling off),but players increasingly preferred it for other shots as well. The cue as it is known today was finally developed by about 1800.
Initially, the mace was used to push the balls, rather than strike them. The newly developed striking cue provided a new challenge.Cushions began to be stuffed with substances to allow the balls to rebound,in order to enhance the appeal of the game. After a transitional period where only the better players would use cues, the cue came to be the first choice of equipment.
The demand for tables and other equipment was initially met in Europe by John Thurston and other furniture makers of the era.The early balls were made from wood and clay, but the rich preferred to use ivory.
Early billiard games involved various pieces of additional equipment, including the "arch" (related to the croquet hoop),"port" (a different hoop) and "king" (a pin or skittle near the arch) in the 1770s,but other game variants, relying on the cushions (and eventually on pockets cut into them),were being formed that would go on to play fundamental roles in the development of modern billiards.
Illustration of a three ball pocket billiards game in early 19th century T眉bingen,Germany, using a table much longer than the modern type. The early croquet-like games eventually led to the development of the carom or carambole billiards category 鈥 what most non-US and non-UK speakers mean by the word "billiards".These games, which once completely dominated the cue sports world but have declined markedly in many areas over the last few generations, are games played with three or sometimes four balls,on a table without holes (and without obstructions or targets in most cases),in which the goal is generally to strike one object ball with a cue ball, then have the cue ball rebound off of one or more of the cushions and strike a second object ball.Variations include three-cushion,straight rail and the balkline variants, cushion caroms,five-pins,and four-ball,among others.
Over time,a type of obstacle returned, originally as a hazard and later as a target,in the form of pockets,or holes partly cut into the table bed and partly into the cushions, leading to the rise of pocket billiards, especially "pool" games, popular around the world in forms such as eight-ball,nine-ball,straight pool and one-pocket amongst numerous others. The terms "pool" and "pocket billiards" are now virtually interchangeable, especially in the US.English billiards (what UK speakers almost invariably mean by the word "billiards") is a hybrid carom/pocket game, and as such is likely fairly close to the ancestral original pocket billiards outgrowth from 18th to early 19th century carom games.

灰姑娘(英汉对照)
Long ago, in a land far away, there lived a beautiful young girl. She was very sad. Her mother had died and her father had married again. His new wife had two ugly daughters, Esmerelda and Griselda. Soon after, her father also died and life immediately changed for the girl. "You will be our servant, "said her stepmother. "You will do everything we say." "You must sleep in the kitchens, by the fire," said the stepsisters. After tending the fire, and cooking and leaning, the girl's clothes were very dirty. She was called to clear away dishes. "There are cinders all over your clothes!" exclaimed the stepmother. "Cinders for Cinderella. That's your new name. Clear these things away, Cinderella." "Cinderella! Cinderella!" sang Esmerelda and Griselda. "Oh, how clever you are, Mama!" Cinderella had to work very hard, as all the other servants were dismissed. One day, an invitation arrived from the palace. "Girls, listen to this," said the stepmother. Cinderella was serving the breakfast. She listened as her stepmother read the invitation. "The King is having a ball," she said, excitedly. "He is looking for a wife for the Prince! Oh, my dears, this is wonderful. He will probably choose one of you, but it will be such a hard choice to make. "Am I invited too, stepmother?" asked Cinderella. "You! Certainly not!" exclaimed her stepmother. "The thought of such a thing. A scruffy servant going to a ball, when only beautiful ladies are invited!" "Hah! Hah!" laughed the stepsisters. "Beautiful! That doesn't include you, Cinderella!" "You may help my two lovely girls to get ready," said her stepmother. "Oh," said Cinderella, sadly. "We shall all have new dresses, girls, and we shall go shopping today. Clear away these things, Cinderella." 'Oh, I wish I could go to the ball,' thought Cinderella. The day of the ball arrived and the whole day was spent preparing Esmerelda and Griselda. Cinderella did her best to make the sisters look pretty, but it was an impossible task. Finally, the coach arrived to collect the girls and their mother. Cinderella was very tired and she wandered back to the kitchens. "Oh, I did so want to go," she sighed as she sat down by the fire. "What's to stop you?" asked a voice. "Who's that?" asked Cinderella, looking around. "I'm here by the door." A strange woman walked up to Cinderella. "I heard you the other day, wishing you could go to the ball. Well, the ball is this evening, and you're going." "But how?" asked Cinderella. "What can you do?" "Anything I want to," said the woman. "I'm your fairy godmother, and I'm here to send you to the ball. She sat down. "Come now," she said. "Dry those tears. We have work to do. I need a large pumpkin, two rats, two mice and a frog. Can you find these?" "Yes," said Cinderella, mystified by the request. "Off you go, then." When Cinderella found all the things, her fairy godmother took them all outside. "Now for the magic," she said. She waved her hands and the air began to twinkle and sparkle. The pumpkin began to grow and change, until standing there was a glittering coach. The mice changed into two fine footmen, the frog into the driver, and the rats into two beautiful horses to pull the coach. Cinderella clapped her hands. "It's beautiful!" she cried. "In you get," said her fairy godmother. "But I can't go like this," said Cinderella. "Like what?" asked the fairy godmother. "You look lovely to me." Cinderella looked at herselfWhile the magic had been working on the pumpkin, it had also been working on her. Instead of her ragged dress she wore a beautiful ball gown, with glass slippers on her feet. "Oh, fairy godmother," said Cinderella. "It's lovely. How can I thank you?" "By going to the ball," said the fairy godmother. "Off you go, but remember, the magic stops working at midnight. Everything will change back then. Now go and enjoy yourself." "Good-bye, fairy godmother," called Cinderella, as the coach swept off. Cinderella arrived at the palace and walked into the ballroom. Everyone stopped and stared. "Who is she?" people asked, including her stepmother and stepsisters. The Prince saw her, and had eyes for no one else for the rest of the evening. Cinderella danced only with the Prince, and as the evening passed, he fell in love with her. A clock chiming reminded Cinderella of her fairy godmother's warning. 'It must be eleven o'clock,' she thought, but she asked the Prince. "What time is it?" "Almost midnight," he answered. "Oh, no!" cried Cinderella. "I must go!" "You can't. Not now," said the Prince. "I must." And Cinderella swept out of the room, and ran out of the palace. As she ran, the clock finished chiming. Cinderella's clothes changed back into rags, and the coach and horses were nowhere to be seen. The Prince tried to follow, but he couldn't catch up. When he reached the door, all he found was one glass slipper. He ran to the main gate. "Was a beautiful girl just driven out of here?" he asked the guard. "No, your Highness. I've only seen a scruffy servant girl," the guard answered. "I've lost her," said the Prince, and he returned sadly to the palace. The next morning, Cinderella's stepmother and stepsisters were talking about the ball. "Did you see the Prince, once that girl arrived." said Esmerelda. "He wouldn't look at anybody else. And it was my turn to dance with him." "Never mind, my dear," said her mother. "She disappeared, so there will probably be another ball, and then you will be chosen." The Prince meanwhile decided to look for the mysterious girl he had fallen in love with. He issued a proclamation. "Whoever the glass shoe fits, shall be wife to the Prince." The Prince and his footman went from house to house of all the ladies invited to the ball. First to the princesses, and then to the duchesses, and finally to all the ladies. He finally arrived at the stepmother's house. "It's my shoe!" cried Esmerelda, trying desperately to pull the shoe on. "Please, miss!" said the footman. "Your foot is too big. you will break the slipper." Griselda tried the shoe, but her toes were far too long. "Is there anyone else?" asked the Prince. "There's only Cinderella, the maid," said the stepmother. "But she wasn't even at the ball." "All the ladies in the kingdom must try the slipper," said the footman. Cinderella was called from the kitchen. Esmerelda and Griselda laughed when they saw how dirty she was. But their laughter turned to tears when they saw Cinderella's foot slide easily into the slipper. "Oh!" they cried. "It fits!" The Prince looked at Cinderella and realised that she was the girl that he had fallen in love with. Cinderella took the other slipper from her pocket and put it on. The Prince was delighted to have found her, and on a bright sunny day, he and Cinderella were married. They lived happily ever after.
